When we think of Fall, we have cherished memories of Autumn Festivals and events. In Hamilton we have the annual Fall Garden & Mum Show at Gage Park. This beautiful showcase has been delighting young and old since 1920 – 104 years! The event is held annually usually during the first 2 weeks of October. Every year the theme of the show is chosen by City Horticulture staff who begin the planning and planting almost as soon as the current one ends. The theme for 2024 was Welcome to Candyland, the children’s board game brought to colourful life. All of the displays were artfully put together with over 200 varieties of Chrysanthemums and more than 100,000 blooms as well.
On a beautiful autumn day with plenty of sunshine I had the opportunity to take in the colour of changing of the leaves at Gage Park as we strolled the paths. It is amazing that this maze was so bountiful and beautifully crafted, colorful and the fresh smells of Mother Nature at its finest. Autumn at Gage Park and the Tropical Greenhouse. The Greenhouse is over 14,000 square feet of greenspace, with a collection of subtropical plants, unique species with tropical and palm trees. With waterfalls with fish, turtles and water lilies. Open daily from 9.00 am to 5 pm and admission is free. ” Built in a style of the Art Deco era in the Canadian City Beautiful Movement of the 1920’s”.
I was there with my friends from Queen’s Garden – a downtown long term care home. We were 1 of 8 other local care homes taking in this year’s show that day. I asked 3 of the residents their favourite thing at this year’s Mum Show.
Lillian, (103).: ” I have been going and enjoying the Fall Garden & Mum Show for over 50 years now.” Wishing Lillian a Happy 104th Birthday on November 01 born in the same year as the first Fall Garden & Mum Show.
Marnie, (79): ” It has to be the beautiful, pleasant people, coming together to celebrate the Mum Show. Looking forward to buying some flowering plants.”
Megs, (age 77): ” It has to be the beautiful colors here in a beautiful park. The laughter of the children throughout Candy Land was absolutely delightful.”
Kaitlyn, Recreation Program Coordinator: ” I have been attending the Fall & Garden Show with the seniors here at Queens Garden for the past 5 years. It has to be the colors of the Fall season and seeing the smiling faces of the seniors getting back in touch with nature.”
The Fall Garden & Mum Show ran this year from October 04th to October 13th 2024. With a cafe, gift, plant and sweet shops and creating your own potted plant to take home for only $5 all under one roof, it was a delightful day spent with the Ladies of Queen’s Garden.
When strolling and walking around taking in the beautiful fall colors here at Gage Park, nestled next to the escarpment and tall trees, it was absolutely stunning. Remember to visit: Gage Park is located at 1000 Main Street East, Hamilton, Ontario. L8M 1N2 telephone (905) 546-2489.
I am already looking forward to next years “Hamilton Fall Garden & Mum Show” here in beautiful Gage Park.
