Sucro Can Sourcing – Sugar Refinery Construction, Pier 15, HOPA Ports

Development of Canada’s largest sugar refinery is well underway at Hamilton’s port lands. $135+ million project by HOPA Ports and tenant Sucro Can Sourcing, the facility is set to produce over a million metric tonnes of refined sugar annually, supplying Ontario’s $48 billion food and beverage sector.

“This is a big deal for us and our tenant Sucro Can,” said Ian Hamilton, HOPA Ports’ President & CEO. “Our team takes pride in partnering with customers to deliver projects like this quickly and expertly.”

The refinery, expected to begin operations in 2025, highlights Hamilton’s growing role in food processing, now the city’s second-largest manufacturing sector. Recent investments include Parrish & Heimbecker’s expanded flour mill and a new rail terminal for food-grade liquids by Toronto Tank Lines (TTL).

With its multimodal transportation assets and access to key inputs, Hamilton offers food manufacturers a competitive edge. “The advantage goes beyond the space to build, to include multimodal transportation infrastructure that can dramatically reduce supply chain costs,” continued Hamilton.

As the refinery takes shape, Hamilton solidifies its position as a hub for food industry growth.
