Building new sugar processing plant at Pier 15, HOPA Ports
Hamilton’s port lands are buzzing with activity as a new sugar refinery is being built by HOPA Ports and its partner Sucro Can Sourcing. The $135+ million facility will be the largest of its kind in Canada, producing over a million metric tonnes of refined sugar every year.
The sugar will supply the food and beverage manufacturing sector in southern Ontario, which is a major employer and revenue generator in the region.
“Ontario’s food and beverage manufacturing sector is the third largest in North America with manufacturing revenues of more than $48 billion,” said Larissa Fenn, VP of Corporate Affairs at HOPA Ports. “The sector has more than 45,000 establishments in the province, employing over 104,800 people. The new facility will help strengthen the province’s food supply chain, supporting Ontario’s position as a leader in food production and processing.”
Sucro Can’s focus on improving its customers’ supply chains is one of the keys to its success, and a big reason for choosing the Port of Hamilton as the location for its new refinery which is expected to be open in 2025.
