On September 10, a ceremony was held on Pier 4, close to the spot where thousands of desperate survivors, fleeing the famine in Ireland caused by a blight that destroyed the potato harvest. For many poor Irish, potatoes were the mainstay of their diet. They endured horrible conditions sailing across the Atlantic and along the Saint Lawrence River. The journey ended at a spot close to the location of the monument. The Global Irish Famine Way project began in Ireland as a heritage trail and noiw has plans for 15 sites in Canada.
