MV Federal Katsura arrives to the Port of Hamilton, HOPA Ports

The Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA Ports) has released its 2024 cargo report, highlighting major growth in agri-food, steel, fuel, and project cargo. With 11.46 million metric tonnes (MT) of cargo moving through its Ports, HOPA continues to support industries vital to Ontario’s economy. The navigation season saw a total of 676 vessels, with 610 in Hamilton, 56 in Oshawa and 10 in Thorold.

“Through strategic, long-term investments, we continue to support key industries and strengthen Ontario’s supply chains,” said Ian Hamilton, President & CEO of HOPA Ports.

Agri-Food Growth at HOPA Ports

Agri-food made up 31% of HOPA’s total cargo in 2024, with 3.36 million MT of shipments moving through Hamilton. A key driver was a 30% rise in raw sugar shipments at the Port of Hamilton, surpassing 180,000 MT. This trend is set to continue with the new Sucro Can Sugar Refinery boosting regional food manufacturing.

Other Key Growth Sectors

Beyond agri-food, other sectors also saw significant gains in 2024:

  • Steel & Project Cargo: Steel-related commodities accounted for 47.5% of HOPA’s total cargo. Finished and semi-finished steel, such as coils, slabs, and beams, reached 956,000 MT, supporting construction and manufacturing industries. Over 37,000 cubic meters of machinery and industrial components also moved through the ports, including parts for the Sucro Can refinery.
  • Fuel & Energy: More than 386,000 MT of fuel transited the Port of Hamilton in 2024, reflecting strong demand from the transportation and aviation sectors.

Key Infrastructure Investments

Several major projects in 2024 further cemented HOPA’s role as a key player in Ontario’s supply chain:

  • Sucro Can Sugar Refinery (Hamilton): A $135 million facility set to process 1 million MT of sugar annually.
  • Parrish & Heimbecker Expansion (Hamilton): Supporting Ontario’s $48 billion food processing industry with an improved wheat supply chain.
  • TTL Rail Transload Terminal (Hamilton): Opened in 2024, handling 2,000 railcars to streamline liquid food transport.
  • Inland Rail Terminal for Containers (Hamilton): A new inland rail terminal designed to enhance containerized goods distribution, pending CBSA approval.

“These projects are critical investments for our local, regional, and international markets,” continued Hamilton. “They further HOPA’s mission to create a sustainable, resilient, and globally oriented supply chain.”
