Summer is around the corner and school will be out. We want our kids to be active but also to keep their minds busy so they’re ready for school in September. Here are some suggestions for activities in the neighbourhood or a short bus or walk away. There are fees for some but there are also lots of great things to do that are free. There are lots of festivals and events in our neighbourhood that are fun for all.

Check out what’s available at Bennetto Recreation Centre. Camp Kidaca registration started in April but there may be spaces available. Supies will be in the parks.

If your little one enjoys digging in the dirt, check out the Grub Club at the North Hamilton Community Health Centre. Aside from dirt under the fingernails, there are opportunities to learn about healthy meals and snacks. Call 905-523-6611 ext. 3006 to register or for more information.

To help your child retain their reading skills over the summer and be prepared to go back to school in September, check out the Summer Reading programme at the Hamilton Public Library. Children can participate by registering and picking up a Summer reading badge. They can register online to track their reading or track them at home. When they have finished a book, talk to them about what they have read; if they liked it and why or why not and their favourite character. Check with the Bookmobile, at Bennetto Rec Centre Tuesday afternoons and Thursday evenings or at Central Library 6 days a week. Storybook Club (Ages birth-4 years): You are your child’s first and best teacher! Read together over the summer and your family will be able to exchange tabs for reading incentives, submit tabs for branch draws and earn a free book.  Summer Readers (Ages 4-12 years) Kids who read over the summer can track their reading online, enter branch draws and collect reading incentives, including a free book.  Reading Buddies (Finished Grade 1 to Age 12) Kids are paired with a volunteer Reading Buddy for individual attention and help with reading. Reading Buddies helps children learn that reading is a fun and rewarding experience that can be shared with family and friends. For more information about Reading Buddies locations and to register in person at your closest branch.

The Library has many programmes for kids and families. Pick up a copy of What’s Happening at the Bookmobile, at Central or online at hpl.ca .

Check out the many events and festivals happening around town including lots in our neighbourhood. And finally, pack up a lunch, grab your books and spend a few hours in one of the nearby parks. Sit under a tree and read.
