There’s no shortage of reasons why the North End is so special, but the abundance of charming small businesses offering delicious food and drinks might top the list. Whether you’re grabbing something for a walk along the Waterfront Trail or watching the boats come and go from the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, the Waterfront Shores Partners have rounded up their favourite must-try local North End stops.
Grandad’s Donuts
574 James St N #1
This family owned and operated coffee and donut shop has been in the North End for more than 30 years. Hailing four bakers that have a combined experience of more than 120 years, the talent behind the tasty creations prides themselves on still making donuts the same way Grandad did. Stop in for a classic, like old fashion glazed or Boston cream, or try something new, like a ghost buster or chocolate dip coconut.
Castelli Cucina
337 James St N
Owner and Hamilton native Daniel Mancini brings his fondest memories from Sunday night dinners growing up surrounded by family, and dishes inspired by his Nonna’s who taught him the fundamentals of Italian cooking, to Castelli Cucina. Before opening Castelli Cucina,
Mancini spent time travelling Italy to discover local dishes and perfect wine pairings, completing his Red Seal program at Niagara College and bee keeping for Mancini’s Honey, so you know you’re in good hands at Castelli Cucina. Our favourite dishes include the Gnocchi Genovese and of course the Fichi pizza.
Williams Fresh Café
47 Discovery Drive
Though Williams Fresh Café is a great place to grab something quickly to-go, with unparalleled views of the waterfront, the patio in the warmer months might have the best view in all of Hamilton. Not quite patio season for you yet? The firepit has you covered. From the patio you’re at the centre of it all – this summer, enjoy a coffee (or a beer with Williams’ fully licenced bar) while watching the roller skating at Pier 8, music on the waterfront on Thursdays, or on Tuesdays, salsa dancing, all from your seat. Must-try menu items include the chicken pesto panini, Williams’ signature salad and the chicken bacon mac n’ cheese. On your way out, stop for cone at Hamilton Waterfront Scoops, attached to Williams.
Fisher’s Pier 4 Pub
554 James Street N
Located at James St. N and Wood St. E, Fisher’s Pier 4 Pub is a neighbourhood favourite. Stop by the 150-year-old building for traditional pub fare, where you’ll be welcomed by dark but cozy interiors, wood-panelled booths and tables, a brick wall dividing the bar, and best of all, a stage for open mic nights, held the last Friday of every month. Favourites include the Yorkshire pudding bowl, fisherman’s platter and of course the fish & chips.
These, and many more, wonderful small businesses contribute to the vibrancy and character of the North End, and we’re so excited that residents at Pier 8 will have them all at their doorstep.
