VON Hamilton is very excited to be working with Hamilton Victory Gardens again this Spring, planting produce in 15 raised garden beds that will grow fresh produce for local food banks and hot meal programs.

Hamilton Victory Gardens is a not-for-profit team of community volunteers dedicated to alleviating hunger and food insecurity in our communities by transforming empty city lots into places of community, education and growth.  VON and the Victory Gardens first met in May 2016 to begin work on the logistics of raised garden beds to be constructed on an unused, fenced area at our Adult Day Centre.  The gardens were built at the end of April 2017 and yielded over 1300 pounds of produce last summer.

In addition to contributing to the harvest from Hamilton city locations, this garden is truly meaningful for the frail complex senior clients who spend their days at the Centre.  For our clients, this garden harkens back to a time when their generation gardened for both enjoyment and necessity.   With support from VON staff, students and volunteers, the garden provides clients with the opportunity to participate as productive members of a community that they helped to build.
