There are many interesting and commemorative days in October.  This article will name just a few from the United Nations, Canada, and Hamilton.

United Nations observances include:

October 1 is the International Day of Older Persons – “Older persons are invaluable sources of knowledge and experience and have much to contribute towards peace, sustainable development, and protecting our planet.” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres

2 is the International Day of Non-Violence

5– World Teacher’s Day – celebrates teachers around the world.

10 – World Mental Health Day – to raise awareness of mental health issue around the world

11 – International Day of the Girl Child – a day to raise awareness of the needs and challenges girls face around the world and help with their human rights.

16 – World Food Day is celebrated widely and is to raise awareness of hunger and food insecurity and is to encourage efforts to combat hunger.  North End is holding a Food Drive on October 26 in recognition of World Food Day.

17 International Day for the Eradication of Hunger

24 United Nations Day – The UN was formed in 1945 and its purpose is to have member nations work together for a better world.

Canada also has Important and Commemorative Days!  October is German Heritage Month, Latin Heritage Month, Canadian Islamic History Month, and Women’s History Month. When you click the link below, you can access a gallery of women who have made an impact in Canada.

There are over 30 Canadian Health Promotion Days in October, including ADHD and Breast Cancer Awareness months, Dyslexia, and Children’s Vision month.  Also noted are National Breastfeeding Week, World Mental Health Day, World Arthritis Day, Hospice and Pallative Care day, Invisible Disabilities Week, and Respiratory Therapy Week to name a few.

The City of Hamilton Website also has an events page. There are many events listed, and below are a few that are close to our neighbourhood.

October 5 the Central Library has an author event, Lacrosse Demonstration and Player Meet and Greet at 11:00 to 4:00 

October 7 is the Fall Compost Giveaway at Bayfront Park

October 27 is Soupreme! An Indigenous Cooking Workshop at Dundurn National Site
