Elderberries May 2017

A Salute to Mothers By Pam Winter What do we all have in common? We have all had a Mother in our lives. Someone who has cheered us up when we are down and encouraged us to try harder and to be better. Listened to our unhappy stories, helped us suffer teenage problems, everything from acne to falling in and out of love. The wisdom of changing jobs, getting married (incidentally no one was ever good enough for their sons/daughters). Cried at our weddings, celebrated the holidays with us and delighted in grandchildren who got away with more than we were allowed to. Mothers, at times we couldn’t do without them and sometimes they frustrated us no end offering advice or criticism usually justified. Mothers were our best friends, always with time to listen while doing dishes or baking cookies. Mothers budgeted well, were always there to bail us out when we were short a few dollars (don’t tell your Father!) Mothers waited for us to get home from a dance or a late night because they cared what happened to us, and couldn’t sleep ‘til we got home. Mothers sat on the bench at hockey practice, usually at an ungodly hour in the morning and froze. Walkabout – Liuna Station

Submitted by Ken Hirter This month’s Walkabout finds me at the very beginning upon entering Hamilton’s North End. The Grand Old Lady itself, the Old Hamilton Train Station aka the Canadian National Railway (CNR) A brief History to the beginning: Let’s go back to the year 1923 to the Grand Truck Railway (GTR) when they declared bankruptcy and merged with the Canadian National Railway. Within 5-five years CNR decided to abandon the old Stuart Street location and started construction on the Grand Old Lady which laid it’s corner stone 87 years ago on May 07, 1930. The first “all...

100 in 1 Day

By Susan Brooks 100 in 1 Day is hundreds of people uniting together with each one taking one small action to improve their city on the same day. It is Small Actions and equals Big Change. This is a global festival of citizen engagement to spark change. Last year Hamilton had more than 200 participants lead 170 different actions across the city. Hamilton’s participation in 100 In 1 Day will happen on June 3rd this year. This is a day celebrated around the world facilitating change. The goal is to have individuals or groups host an ‘urban intervention’ (a one-day community project). Some interventions from last year included Art in the Park, Save the Bees ideas, cycling rides, Library fun, Decorating alleys and streets, soccer games, long runs, building parks, Art escapes, Fitness events, Book exchanges, Movie night and games and songs. My favorite event had to be FREE Puppy Kissing Booth! Be a citizen activator with 100 in 1 Day and inspire change in our city! Check out the website and submit your plan to make Hamilton better:...
